This year, the IEEE 3DUI 2017 Symposium will hold the 8th annual 3DUI Contest. It is open to anyone interested in 3D User Interfaces (3DUIs), from researchers to students, enthusiasts, and professionals. The purpose of the contest is to stimulate innovative and creative solutions to challenging 3DUI problems. 3DUI 2017 will be co-located with IEEE Virtual Reality. Due to the recent explosion of affordable and portable 3D devices, this year's contest will be judged live at 3DUI. Contestants are required to bring their systems for live judging for attendees to experience them.


The 3DUI Contest is open to anyone interested in 3DUIs - researchers, students, hobbyists, and professionals, or anyone else. Contestants can use any software to develop their solutions. Hardware requirements are specified below.

Problem Description

Develop a 3DUI for an Augmented Reality (AR) exhibit of constructive art. The task is to build virtual pieces of artwork from provided virtual materials in a real physical space. Provided ARTags (see Materials) should be used to track the physical space. The 3DUI must meet the following requirements:

  1. The 3DUI must be developed for a tablet or smartphone and must require physical 3D interactions. The tablet or smartphone has to be held in 1 or 2 hands. Additional hardware to hold the device is not allowed (this includes, e.g., Google Cardboard).
  2. The 3DUI is not to use external devices or sensors, outside of the tablet or smartphone. It can involve the touchscreen and the sensors integrated into the tablet or smartphone, such as multi-touch gestures, buttons, gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers, GPS, cameras, and microphone. Additional AR markers are allowed for object detection and as extension for the implementation of the 3DUI.
  3. Provided ARTags will serve as pedestals for constructing virtual pieces of artwork. Once placed on a pedestal, the base of a virtual piece of artwork should not be manipulated (example). The virtual camera should not be manipulated independently of the ARTags. The display's view of the virtual world should match the camera’s view of the physical space at all times.
  4. The 3DUI must provide 3D interaction techniques for selection, integrated 3DOF positioning, and integrated 3DOF rotations, across all tasks. In addition, the 3DUI must meet the following requirements for the following pieces of artwork:
    • Fried Sculpture: A 3D interaction technique for 3DOF scaling.
    • Particle System: An interaction technique for parameter manipulation.
  5. The contestants must show in their submissions that their 3DUI provides the ability to reconstruct one of the virtual pieces of artwork from the provided virtual materials (see Materials).

Additional to the above requirements, your proposed 3DUI should ...
... be innovative,
... provide high usability,
... be simple to learn and use, and
... be able to effectively finish the tasks in the provided scene.

Submissions that do not meet the above requirements will not be considered for the contest.

Teams of up to ten people may submit solutions.


Teams must submit a short paper of two pages, with a description of the solution, details about the hardware and software used, a brief description of the closest related work and how your system is novel, and a description of how you iterated upon the design. If your submission is accepted, this paper will be included in the 3DUI proceedings, and therefore must be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format.


Teams will also submit a video that presents the solution to the public, including an explanation of the equipment, software, and interaction techniques used to solve the problem. Additionally, the video should include representative footage of example users as they perform the task. If your submission is accepted, the video will be included in the electronic proceedings. Videos should have a length of 60-90 seconds, and should include the title along with the names and affiliations of the contestants. The submitted file should be a high quality compressed video with a size of no more than 50 MB. We will accept videos in MPEG (.mpg), Quicktime (.mov), and MP4 (.mp4).


If your submission is accepted, you will participate in a live demo session at the conference, where you will showcase your work to the 3DUI community and have a chance to win awards. Since this year's contest will be judged live at 3DUI, we will invite various judges from the community to judge your solution. The judging criteria are novelty, effectiveness, and usability. We will further offer on-site judging for all 3DUI attendees.

The final score will be the combination of the expert judges’ score (60%) plus the audience scores (40%). A winning team with the highest score, as well as a runner-up with the second highest score, will be awarded during the closing session of 3DUI.
